Resource Program
Identifying & Catering for Learners with Difficulties
The Resource Program is based on the philosophy of providing the most appropriate learning environment for students as they progress developmentally and individually. The program recognises that students learn at different rates and with different degree of effectiveness and attempts to give equal value to all students’ learning needs and abilities.
In this program we are careful to try and intervene as early as possible to support the developing needs of students requiring targeted and remedial help. At the same time, we allow sufficient time for each student to acquire the basic skills and processes without being categorised as displaying a learning disability. We also recognise that students will display different needs at different stages and that student will move into or out of the program as their learning progresses and their abilities develop.
Diagnosis of Specific Learning Needs is usually initiated by our inhouse testing program, a part of which includes the assessment carried out at enrolment. These can be supported by tests undertaken by external assessors. The results from each of these testing sources are then used to plan a Learning Program that addresses the particular needs of the individual, according to the material and personnel resources available in the school.
In each of the sub schools a policy of Inclusion is implemented. This means students with Special Learning Needs are catered for within the context of the regular class. The regular class teacher then provides modification of the work set for the group, so that it provides appropriately differentiated challenges for the students with particular needs. In each school the classroom teachers are supported by a Resource teacher, trained in Special Education, who is available for consultation, guidance and advice, as well as a Teachers Aide who is available for inclass support of the students.
