School House - Mueller

In November 1825 at the age of twenty George Mueller was invited to a prayer meeting instead of the normal get-together with a group of mates. That night George felt the presence of God that was to change the rest of his life. George Mueller prayed, "At last! God, tonight I am yours!"

George Mueller was to live his life with a total dependence on God's provision. He became a minister but he felt that there was more that God wanted to do with him. In December 1835 George told his congregation of his plans to start an orphanage. In answer to George's prayers God provided money, a cook, a husband and wife team to help care for the children and all their furniture. The orphanage was set up in Wilson Street, Bristol.
George was most disheartened when on opening day no one came near the orphanage. George could not understand why this had happened as God had provided for their every need. Then he realised that he hadn't asked God to send him the children to care for. The next morning the prayed-for children were there and the orphanage began to grow. Soon many more rooms were needed to accommodate the large number of children in care.
George Mueller continued to rent more places on Wilson Street to cater for all the children. The Muellers had resolved never to ask a person for help, but to depend entirely on God. Despite periods of apparent financial crisis, God proved his faithfulness by providing exactly what they required. George, his wife Mary and daughter Lydia cared for the many orphans. Lydia told her father of a dream to have a place in the country where children could live in wide open spaces and smell the sea breeze. The dream soon became George's and through his prayer he was led to believe that God would support this dream The dream became reality as God provided the exact amount of money to purchase land and construct an orphanage for three hundred children. God provided for all the running costs and daily needs of the orphanage.

George relied totally on God's provision. One morning there was no food in the pantry for the children's breakfast. After having prayed that God would provide, George sent the children to set the table. When all the children were dressed and seated at the table there was a knock on the door. Standing there was a baker with arms full of left-over bread.

When he died, aged 93, George Mueller had started five orphanages which catered for over 2 000 children. His daughter Lydia took charge of the orphanages until her death. Today, Mueller House in Bristol, England, still conducts no financial campaigns and trusts in God for its total support. It is a monument to a very faithful God.
